Pembangunan pendidikan adalah penting dalam membentuk modal insan yang berdaya saing terutama bagi penduduk 
luar bandar. Lembaga Kemajuan Johor Tenggara (KEJORA) bermatlamat untuk mencapai pembangunan modal insan sebagai salah satu perancangan strategiknya. Bandar Penawar di bawah naungan KEJORA merupakan pusat pelancongan dan pendidikan di wilayah Johor Tenggara. Terdapat banyak entiti pendidikan di Bandar Penawar seperti Sekolah Sains Kota Tinggi, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Bandar Penawar, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bandar Penawar, Sekolah Sukan Tunku Mahkota Ismail (SSTMI), Kolej Komuniti Bandar Penawar, Kolej Professional MARA (KPM), Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara (IKBN) dan Institut Sains dan Teknologi Darul Takzim (INSTEDT). Integrasi antara entiti berkenaan dan seumpamanya dalam aspek perkongsian maklumat terutamanya bagi aktiviti-aktiviti berkaitan pendidikan dan kemahiran yang dapat ditawarkan kepada pemegang taruh termasuk pelbagai lapisan pelajar dan masyarakat setempat adalah amat penting. Maka pembangunan satu pusat yang dipanggil Pusat Kemajuan dalam Informatik Pendidikan Luar Bandar (iPKPLB) atau Centre for Advancement in Rural Education Informatics (iCARE) berperanan dalam mewujudkan suatu pelantar bagi mengintegrasikan pelbagai program dan aktiviti berkaitan pendidikan ke arah kelestarian pembangunan pendidikan luar bandar melalui penggunaan teknologi maklumat dan komunikasi iaitu dalam bidang informatik pendidikan.



 The academic staffs of the department is dedicated to support the faculty in teaching, equipping and preparing students to be high quality graduates and software practitioners in the area of Software Engineering, Computer Graphics and Multimedia, and Bioinformatics.

Software Engineering programmes at the department are continuously updated in accordance with the recent Information and Communications Technology (ICT) trends, research, best practices, and software development issues. In addition, the Computer Graphics and Multimedia programme has been the pioneer in offering such area among Malaysian public universities.

The department has been supporting the faculty’s goal in computing field by offering unique undergraduate and postgraduate programmes continuously since its establishment. All the programmes address analytical and practical skills in software development that give emphasis on a systematic and disciplined approach to meet the growing needs and demands in both ICT industry and the society.

The department comprises more than fifty dedicated academic staff. The staff members actively and continuously organise events such as conferences, research seminars, and short trainings as the platform for the staff and students to support the faculty in achieving its annual target and performance. Majority of academic members are also active in their research innovations in the area of software, graphic and multimedia in line with the latest innovations and ideas in ICT field.

Besides academic and research, the department contributes to the local community by participating in exhibitions and community outreach programmes that involves software and education. A number of academic staff has been involved in a major community project under the faculty known as UTM-KEJORA iCARE project that promotes the use of ICT towards education informatics. KEJORA is a rural agency that develops the South-East Johor region. This collaboration allows related members of the department and other members under the faculty to implement their research for the benefit of local community.

In tandem with the university’s vision to be recognised as a world-class centre of academia and technological excellence, Software Engineering Department is committed in the development of human capital and innovative computing technologies in the related areas to achieve the vision.
